///

I’ve been thinking about feedback lately. About the fact that there are a lot of different feedback situations and constellations. We’re all very different, both as givers and receivers of feedback. I’ve been given some tips about different feedback models and as soon as I have the time I’m going to read about them. However, at the moment I find that I need to sort out my own thoughts on the subject. So that’s what I’m doing here. All of this is about theatre and playwriting. That’s the context.

Feedback can come at different points on the writing process.

A.   While you are writing, but before there’s a production.
B.   During the production process, so during the planning stage or during rehearsals.
C.   After the run of the play is over. This might include the run itself. I’m having trouble placing that part of the process at the moment.

At all these different points the premise and the reception of feedback are different. That’s what I’d like to write about now, but I realise that I haven’t really thought this through yet.

Feedback can happen between two people, one-on-one, or in a group.

D.   One-on-one with someone who isn’t directly involved in a production of the play.
E.   One-on-one with someone who is directly involved in the production of the play, like the director.

F.    In a group of people who aren’t directly involved in a production of the play, like a writers’ group.
G.   In a group of people who are directly involved in a production of the play, like the ensemble who are going to perform it.

The relationship between the person, or persons, giving the feedback and the text matters. If it’s a designated feedback talk or a casual conversation.

Yet another aspect of this is on the basis of what feedback is given.

H.   A completed full draft of the play.
I.      Parts of the play (which might not be written in full yet).
J.    The playwright’s presentation of the play, or their idea for the play.

This is important too. Important beacuse it represents different phases of the writing process.

So, this are my thoughts at the moment. I’ll keep thinking about the. At times like these I notice that I find it easier to think if there’s some sort of framework for me to think in, or through.

If there is already somebody else out there that have thought about these things and written a brilliant article, or dissertation or book – please tell me! I want to read them!

Poddar /// Podcasts

///

It’s been a while since I wrote a blogpost and that’s mainly because it’s been a work-intense autumn. When I’ve not been working (and sometimes while I’ve been working) I’ve spent with my new hobby: podcasts. The past year I’ve been listening more and more to the radio. Since I like listening to something while I’m washing dishes, ironing or doing other more or less mechanical tasks I started listening via my laptop, since most of the radio shows I like were also available as podcasts. From there it was a short step to listening to programs that weren’t broadcast via radio, but only available online.

I don’t read a lot of fiction, mostly because I have to prioritize among my piles of unread books. I make up for this by listening to programs mainly about books, literature and writing. So far I’ve only scrapped at the surface of the sea of podcasts out there. I’ve got a couple of favourites that I’ve listened to a bit longer, but there are also some podcast that I’ve only had time to try one or two episodes off but defiantly want to get better acquainted with. A part from that I’ve got a long list of pods that I’m going to try out as soon as I have the chance. It takes me a couple of episodes to get a feel for the hosts, their interests, the style and format of the pod. So, that’s why I like to listen to more than one episode when I’m trying a new one.

Well, to the point. I’ll list some of the pods I’m subscribing to at the moment, along with a short comment about each. They aren’t in any way ranked, they just happened to be written down in this order.

I like the whole Book Riot page, there are lots of fun articles and it all feels very unpretentious and nerdy in a nice way. In the Dear Book Nerd pod they answer questions send in by the listeners, like an old fashioned questions & answers column, in an old fashioned magazine. The question cover a range of problems related to, in one way or another, books and reading.

The editor invites an author to read and discuss a short story (by someone else) from their archive. You get both a short story read out loud to you and a discussion about it between editor and that month’s guest author.

Bibliotekspodden Solen [The Library Podcast The Sun (my translation)]
A couple of librarians from Stockholm’s City Library talk about a topic they’ve picked out every episode. They come at the topic both through books they picked out and through their own views and experiences. A nice, relaxed pod and you end up learning something each time, without even trying.

The host talks to an author about one of her/his books. This is done with regular readers, book club members who’ve read the book in question, in the studio. The audience get to ask questions and sometimes the author asks the audience questions. Most of the time they manage to create a warm, relaxed an intimate atmosphere. There are a couple of books that would not have ended up in my bookshelf if it weren’t for this program.

Författarpodden [The Authors’ Pod (my translation)]
I’ve only listened to one episode of this, but I definately want to listen to more:
”Sweden’s best literary podcast according to DN [daily newspaper] (2014). The writers Agnes Hellström and Frida Skybäck both made it through the eye of the needle and were published by a big publishing house, but they know how difficult the road from dreams of writing to a book deal can be. With The Authors’ Pod they offer an insight into the seemingly closed world of publishing and writing.” (My translation)

Fantastisk podd [Fantasy/Fantastic Pod (my translation)]
A podcast about writing fantasy and horror in Swedish. It’s made by writers from different parts of Sweden and Finland. Listen, and you’ll hear what it’s all about!

A part from podcast about books and literature I also listen to theatre-themed pods.

NT publishes recordings of different talks and interviews that they arrange as a part of their program. In other words, they are recorded in front of a live audience and at the theatre, not in a studio setting (unlike the others I’ve mentioned). The episodes vary in length depending on the type of event in question. It’s worth scrolling through their archive!

Yle / Dramapodden [The Drama Podcast (my translation)]
Here you can find radio plays produced by Radioteatern and different talks and interviews. It’s a fairly new podcast so it’ll be interesting to see how it develops.

I do listen to podcast about other things than books and theatre, but I’ll save that for another blogpost, another time. However, if you’ve got any tips about good podcast, please share them!
