London

So, a new trip to London is fast approaching. I’m not a big city type person but London is definitely my favourite place to visit when I’m travelling, for anything from a long weekend up to a week, after that I want to go home again, both because the money has run out and because I need a break from any all kinds of crowds and large groups of people.

When it comes to seeing plays I try and buy tickets in advance to the productions I think will be sold out while leaving time for making decisions when I’m there. So far I’ve visited a new theatre almost every time and this time around it’s going to be the Donmar Warehouse in the West End (last trip it was almost only new spaces: the Unicorn Theatre in Southwark, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse which is the indoor stage at Shakespeare’s Globe, the Bush Theatre in Shepard’s Bush). I’ve seen a couple of Donmar productions through NTLive but I’ve never been in the actual space. This time it’s going to be a new version of a Brecht play.  A part from that I’m going to the Soho Theatre (great bar!) and to a couple of West End production.

Among the theatres I usually look up before a trip to London, and I hope to sooner or later be able to visit (sometimes they’ve not got anything interesting on the days I happen to be there and sometimes they’ve got something very interesting on and are all sold out) are the Almeida Theatre, the Young Vic (a nice café/bar to visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood) , the Royal Court Theatre, Theatre 503, the Arcola Theatre, the Finborough Theatre, the Southwark Playhouse, the Tricyle Theatre. Alongside that there are of course masses of theatre and groups to keep an eye on for theatre productions, like the Barbican, Battersea Arts Centre, Wilton’s Music Hall.

Among the theatre’s I usually look up and would like to visit again are National Theatre (great bookshop! Go there!), the Royal ShakespeareCompany (at the Barbican), Shakespeare’s Globe, the Old Vic Theatre, the Hampstead Theatre and the Gate Theatre

So, if you're going to London and want to see a play, these are my tips.
